چکیده

We report the effects of self-mixing interference on gas detection using tunable diode laser spectroscopy. For very weak feedback, the laser diode output intensity gains a sinusoidal modulation analogous to that caused by low finesse etalons in the optical path. Our experiments show that self-mixing interference can arise from both specular reflections (eg cell windows) and diffuse reflections (eg Spectralon and retroreflective tape), potentially in a wider range of circumstances than etalon-induced interference. The form and magnitude of the modulation is shown to agree with theory. We have quantified the effect of these spurious signals on methane detection using wavelength modulation spectroscopy, and discuss the implications for real gas detectors. Signal processing and calibration procedures for in situ diode-laser absorption spectroscopy.

Gas analyzers based on tunable diode-laser spectroscopy (TDLS) provide high sensitivity, fast response and highly specific in situ measurements of several atmospheric trace gases simultaneously. Under optimum conditions even a shot noise limited performance can be obtained. For field applications outside the laboratory practical limitations are important. At ambient mixing ratios below a few pa...

Use of diffuse reflections in tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy: implications of laser speckle for gas absorption measurements

The use of diffusely scattering materials as a means of eliminating interference fringes has been investigated. Their use introduces laser speckle that can contribute a random, rather than periodic, uncertainty to gas measurements. We have established a method for quantifying the uncertainty due to speckle and investigated ways of reducing it. We characterised the speckle at 823nm allowing the ...

Diode-laser-based sum-frequency generation of tunable wavelength-modulated UV light for OH radical detection.

Greater than 1.5 microW of tunable wavelength-modulated 308-nm radiation was generated by sum-frequency mixing of 90 mW of 835-nm diode-laser output and 1.5 W of 488-nm Ar(+)-laser output in a beta-barium metaborate crystal. Hydroxyl radicals formed in a discharge-flow reactor were detected by use of the generated UV beam by direct absorption, wavelength-modulation absorption spectroscopy, and ...

Harmonic wavelet analysis of modulated tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy signals.

Wavelet analyses of tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy signals were performed. The absorption spectroscopy data were obtained by repeatedly scanning the beams from a tunable diode laser operating in the near infrared across absorption lines of gaseous NH(3) contained within a windowed glass tube. The laser was modulated and wavelet analyses of the absorption data were performed. It was...
